The City Council of l’Alcora has approved the necessary urban planning framework to enable the development of a green hydrogen production facility as part of Smartenergy’s Orange.bat Phase 2 project, aimed to industrial decarbonisation.
The decision allows the implementation of a project aimed to reinforce the strategic role of renewable hydrogen in supporting industrial transformation in the Castellón region.
The planned facility is designed to supply locally produced renewable hydrogen to hard-to-abate sectors, particularly the Spanish ceramic industry, one of the most significant industrial clusters in Europe.
The project is expected to:
- Contribute to the decarbonisation of energy-intensive industrial processes
- Improve long-term energy competitiveness
- Generate qualified employment during construction and operational phases
- Deliver sustainable economic impact at municipal and regional level
The Orange.bat Phase 2 project aims to deploy scalable and industrially integrated renewable hydrogen infrastructure across key industrial hubs in the Valencian Community.
By aligning municipal planning instruments with strategic energy infrastructure, the project supports Spain’s wider industrial transition and contributes to European decarbonisation objectives.
