Orange.bat Project

Decarbonising one of Europe’s leading ceramic industry clusters through renewable hydrogen.

Orange.bat is a large-scale renewable hydrogen project that will be located in Onda, Castellón, designed to accelerate the decarbonisation of the Spanish ceramic industry through the supply of renewable hydrogen to energy-intensive industrial off-takers.

The project combines large-scale electrolysis, renewable power sourcing and future hydrogen infrastructure integration to create a scalable industrial decarbonisation ecosystem in one of Europe’s most important ceramic manufacturing regions.

Project Overview

Orange.bat represents a major step towards the industrial-scale deployment of renewable hydrogen in hard-to-abate sectors.

The project is strategically located in Onda, Castellón, at the heart of one of Europe’s most important industrial ceramic production hubs. By supplying renewable hydrogen to several ceramic companies in the region, Orange.bat aims to contribute to the reduction of industrial emissions while strengthening industrial competitiveness and long-term energy resilience.

The project foresees the construction of a 100 MWe alkaline electrolyser plant with an estimated annual renewable hydrogen production of approximately 11,960 tonnes. Electricity supply for the hydrogen production facility is expected to be secured through renewable power purchase agreements linked to wind and photovoltaic generation assets, while the platform is also expected to connect to future hydrogen backbone infrastructure planned for the region.

Orange.bat has been supported under the European Hydrogen Bank “Auction-as-a-Service” scheme and has been granted up to €82.5 million in public support.

Industrial Decarbonisation

The ceramic industry is one of the most energy-intensive industrial sectors in Southern Europe and represents a key pillar of the regional economy in Castellón.

Orange.bat has been conceived as an integrated industrial decarbonisation platform capable of supporting the transition of industrial consumers towards low-carbon energy solutions while contributing to the development of a broader renewable hydrogen ecosystem in the region.

The project is intended to supply renewable hydrogen to multiple industrial off-takers within the ceramic cluster, supporting the progressive reduction of fossil fuel dependency in industrial heat-intensive processes.

Strategic Location

Located in Onda, within the province of Castellón, Orange.bat benefits from its proximity to one of Europe’s highest concentrations of ceramic industrial activity.

The region combines:

  • Strong industrial demand
  • Existing industrial infrastructure
  • High renewable energy potential
  • Strategic positioning within Spain’s emerging hydrogen economy

This industrial density creates favourable conditions for the deployment of renewable hydrogen solutions at scale.

Spanish & European Recognition

Orange.bat has been selected within the framework of the European Hydrogen Bank “Auction-as-a-Service” scheme and has received support through the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan financed by the European Union – NextGenerationEU.

The project has also been positively evaluated by CINEA and IDAE as part of Spain’s renewable hydrogen deployment strategy.
