EKZ and Smartenergy to build photovoltaic plant in Algarve

EKZ, one of Switzerland's largest energy suppliers, and Smartenergy, a Swiss renewable energy company, will invest 35 million euros in this plant, which will prevent the emission of around 34 tons of CO2.

EKZ and Smartenergy launched on September 14, 2020 the first stone of the Morgado de Arge Photovoltaic Plant (Cotovio), which will be built in Portimão, Algarve, in an event attended by the Deputy Minister and Secretary of State for Energy, João Galamba, and the Mayor of Portimão, Isilda Gomes.

The plant will occupy 135 hectares and will have an annual renewable electricity production capacity of 90,495 MWh. The electricity produced there should meet the needs of 7,631 homes, according to housing typologies and average consumption.

The investment amounts to 35 million euros and has Voltalia as project partner in engineering, procurement and construction.

The plant will be built over a year, providing employment during this period to about two hundred workers.

The plant will have 110 thousand solar modules and therefore one of the companies’ major concerns in the project was the minimization of impacts on the landscape.

With the coming into operation of the photovoltaic plant the equivalent of 34,026 tons of CO2 will be avoided.
